Lecture Marc Rölli: Art and Criticism. Remarks on an intricate relationship
As part of the lecture series "Art and Knowledge" at the Martin Luther University Halle.
Abstract: The critical thinking of the philosophical tradition is currently having a hard time in art. Whether Kant, Hegel or Adorno - all together they form, it seems, a text perceived as uniform, insofar as it can be defined by Eurocentric, colonial, patriarchal characteristics. Critical theory does not seem critical enough to many today. The lecture will explore the critical potential of contemporary art - in the context of its connections to the feminist and post- or decolonial discourses currently setting the tone. In the process, it will become apparent that the traditionally philosophically informed understanding of modern art and criticism has crucial deficits.
