What images do we have of data? How does the “digital native” generation encounter the current flood of data? Students from the classes “Expanded Cinema” and “Installation and Space” at the HGB Leipzig present their works and discuss related topics.

Set as a stream-of-consciousness film, "Master Bedroom" tells the story of a young woman whose life changes drastically after the blast of a drift kills her fiancé and, except for a few women, the entire population. The protagonist, voiced by Rachel de la Torre, begins an eremitic life on the top floor of a skyscraper. There she reflects on her relationship with Jack, her femininity, sexuality and longings. Driven by the hope of an afterlife, she decides to retell her story by means of videos from the internet.

The sculptural work "Störsender" (2021) by Jonas Roßmeißl addresses the telecommunicative infrastructure of social communication spaces. The work, a social intervention, appropriates technologies of electronic warfare for this purpose and transfers the disruption of our ties to the "outside world" into the context of aesthetic discourse.

Video installation
According to a contemporary meme, the evolution of all life culminates in the emergence of crabs. This is an exaggeration of the phenomenon of convergent evolution. For his video installation, Yannick Harter draws on these visual cultures of the 21st century media world, de- and re-codes them and juxtaposes them with aesthetics of evolutionary biology, AI-supported manufacturing processes and labour struggles in the so-called gig economy. Phenomena that are related to each other due to their conditionality through data and the transmission of (digital) information. The work negotiates the question of how data-driven processes can be thought poetically and in solidarity.
