In the summer of 1988, Tina Bara and a group of artists visit the Buna plant in Schkopau. "Plaste und Elaste" is the slogan for the plastic products made there. Bara is actually supposed to portray the artists. They have accepted an invitation from the Association of Visual Artists (VBK) to a "plein air" at the plant. The encounter with the workers is intended to shape their artistic work. But Bara succeeds in taking pictures of the ongoing environmental pollution and the conditions under which people work there. In 2025, Bara edited a photographic film from these documents, which can now be seen in the exhibition Robotron. Code and Utopia exhibition.

In this interview with Sabine Weier, co-curator of the exhibition, Tina Bara presents her work.

Tina Bara studied history and art history at the Humboldt University in Berlin and photography at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig. In the GDR, she worked as a freelance photographer and was active in the oppositional peace movement, including "Women for Peace". In July 1989, she moved to West Berlin. She has been a professor of artistic photography at the HGB since 1993. Since 2000, Bara has regularly taken part in exhibitions, published books and organised art and teaching projects in Germany and abroad.

The Wüstenrot Foundation's Documentary Photography Prizes are the most important awards of their kind in Germany. Every two years, they are awarded to young artists from German universities and academies who question the present with contemporary documentary image strategies and forms of representation. After kicking off in Essen, the 15th edition of the awards will stop in Stuttgart for four months. The exhibition can be seen there in "THE GÄLLERY-Raum für Fotografie".

Malte Uchtmann from the photography and media class and the expanded cinema class is part of the award-winning exhibition. In the award-winning video and sound installation ANT*HOLOGY: De/Bugging the cultural history of ants, Malte Uchtmann uses the representation of ants to explore how our perception is influenced by our social embedding and the possibilities of acquiring knowledge. The cultural history of ants becomes the starting point for an examination of human social forms.

Clemens von Wedemeyer's work Social Geometry is part of the exhibition "Community. Photography and Society" at the Kunstpalast Düsseldorf.

The football fan club, the family, the political collective - people strive to belong. Since the invention of photography, the medium has not only captured belonging, but can also fuel or question it. Photography makes it possible to demonstrate that you are part of something bigger. It can also be used to draw boundaries with those who are not part of one's own community.

The winter semester at the HGB traditionally ends with the Rundgang: In a variety of exhibitions, performances, installations and work presentations, students, teachers and staff show what they have been working on during the current academic year. Works and projects from the four disciplines of book art/graphic design, photography, painting/graphics and media art will be presented, accompanied by a series of events. Once again this year, the entire university building will be used for the exhibitions and presentations, i.e. the ballroom, corridors and classrooms.

Parallel to the Rundgang, the 2025/26 Study Prize of the HGB Friends e.V. and Sparkasse Leipzig will be awarded.

The exhibition of the Giesecke+Devrient Foundation's banknote collection presents around 50 banknotes and invites visitors on a journey of discovery through sounds, cultural heritage and national identity. Similar to an orchestra in which different instruments work together in harmony, the banknotes are divided into five thematic areas to emphasise different aspects of their content. Heidi Specker's work "Noten, 2018", macro shots of a 100 DM note with Clara Schumann in four different colours, is also on display.

On the one hand, it is about the creators of classical music, whose works represent an important part of European identity as a sounding cultural heritage. Their compositions connect people and generations. The portraits on the banknotes are symbols of appreciation that go far beyond the material value of the notes.

Instruments are also often at the centre of banknote design. The inventor of the saxophone Alphonse Sax (1814-1894) was recognised on the French 200-franc note of 1995. His instrument helped jazz and swing achieve a global breakthrough and fundamentally changed musical genres.

An opening ceremony will take place on 5 March 2026 at 7 pm. In addition to a ceremonial inauguration of the exhibition, an exhibition of the three printing scholarship holders who received the scholarship sponsored by the Giesecke and Devrient Foundation at the Museum of Printing Arts in 2025 will also open.

The exhibition shows works by Ukrainian artist Anna Perepechai, who has been living and working in Germany and Ukraine since 2014. In them, the artist explores colonial and imperial violence on societies, families, bodies, landscapes and everyday objects in a subjective and documentary manner. Perepechai's artistic practice combines photography with her own texts, archive materials and installative objects. More information...

The D21 Kunstraum is entering its second round with the f/stop - Fotomonat and is once again dedicated to the "young local photo scene". 2026 graduates of art colleges from the Central German region were invited to present photographic works that were created as final projects in the context of the current annual theme "ALIEN".

The selection was made by a jury consisting of: Cihan Çakmak (artist), Philipp Freytag (curator of photography & media art at the MdbK), Michael Moser (D21, photographer), Christin Müller (freelance curator & author for photography), Constanze Müller/Sandra Plessing (D21, f/stop).

The retrospective exhibition "Giorgio Morandi. Resonances" at the Museum für Gegenwartskunst Siegen until 22 March 2026 explores Morandi's special position in the art of the last 80 years. It shows more than 60 works by the painter from the early 1920s to the 1960s. The presentation starts with the comprehensive group of Morandi works in the Lambrecht-Schadeberg Collection and expands on this with loans from German and European collections. At the same time, the exhibition adopts Morandi's principle and places the works in dialogue with older and more recent works by other artists.

On 26 February 2026, curator Christian Spies will hold an artist talk with Franziska Reinbothe.

A travelling exhibition from ECAL (University of Art and Design Lausanne), with a contribution developed in collaboration with the HGB Leipzig Type Design class, Atlas gives an overview of what type design is, what it can do visually, and how letterforms are used in everyday life.

We are surrounded by type every day, yet few people think about the designers who draw the letterforms. In a setting inspired by the frames letterpress printers used to dry their freshly printed sheets, the exhibition is conceived to be accessible to a wider audience, not only specialists, and showcases experimental letterforms, extensive type families and multiple scripts. Atlas then continues as a travelling exhibition, with presentations in Italy, Canada, the USA and Switzerland.

AI technologies are fundamentally changing how images are created, edited, distributed, described and viewed. Their influence on visual culture and contemporary art practice is one of the most visible phenomena in this field, which is dominated by opaque technical processes.

The comprehensive thematic exhibition will occupy both exhibition spaces of the SCHIRN with around 40 works, including video installations, graphics, sculptures and photographs. The SCHIRN is presenting around 25 international artists, including Prof. Clemens von Wedemeyer, Nora Al-Badri, Nouf Aljowaysir, Julian Charrière, Grégory Chatonsky, Kate Crawford & Vladan Joler, Holly Herndon & Mat Dryhurst, Agnieszka Kurant, Trevor Paglen, Hito Steyerl, Sasha Stiles and Taller Estampa.

A broad spectrum of topics is examined, including resources and environmental factors as well as questions of perception, machine vision or facial and emotional recognition. The works address topics ranging from micro-labour and the establishment of alternative histories to possible visions of the future. Other aspects include so-called AI slop and slopaganda (the use of AI-generated images as a new form of political propaganda). A series of time capsules - small cabinets of curiosities - link the present with the past in the show, thus embedding the current changes brought about by new technologies in a historical context.
