In the HGB library, all media are categorised according to an "in-house" classification system. Other libraries use classifications such as "DDC" (Dewey Decimal Classification) or in German-speaking countries preferably "RVK" (Regensburger Verbundklassifikation) to make media searchable and findable, our holdings are too specialised for these rough classification systems. Marianne Seyfert, who developed a decimal classification system for the HGB library, recognised this back in the 1970s. The advantage is that we can easily make adjustments at any time, but the high degree of self-control we are subject to is problematic. Several classification points can be assigned to each title in the catalogue, but there is only one location.

In "Hidden Treasures No. 4 - Work in the Library", Ines Schaber and Susanne Keichel searched the HGB library for books on the subject of "work". The concept of "work" plays an important role in our teaching and in our artistic endeavours, but does not form a classification of its own in the library's classification system. In order to find books, the term must be thought of differently and the search must find other ways. We searched using keywords in the catalogue, our existing knowledge or simply by walking through the rows in the stacks. The resulting selection of books shows the possible presence of a topic that is not named in the system and yet is pervaded by it.
