Lignite mining has greatly changed the region around Altenburg over the past 200 years, leaving its mark on people and the landscape. Today, not much is left of the former mines and brick factories. The "blooming landscapes" have literally come true in what was once one of the dirtiest districts of the GDR, even though there are still many contaminated sites below the earth's surface. The scars left by years of overexploitation and environmental pollution are repeatedly visible as markers in the landscape.
The multi-channel installation "Above the Fractures" refers to the fields collapsed by mining and questions what effects this structural change has had on the identity of the local people and how their perception of the landscape in the former Meuselwitz mining area has changed.
