THE WORKBOOK From Windhoek to Kamina to Nauen is an exploration of today's echoes of telegraphy from Nauen (Germany) to Kamina (Togo) to Windhoek (Namibia).
The technology of wireless telegraphy (a precursor to our current global internet technology) is significantly implicated in colonialist histories of violence, war and genocide. The world's first use of wireless telegraphy as a mobile military communication medium was in the war against the Herero and the Nama in 1904 - 1908, which ended in genocide. Subsequently, from 1910 onwards, work was done on establishing a permanent radio link between the German Empire and the colonies. From 1914, this technology was used, but was destroyed again after only a few months with the outbreak of the First World War due to the occupation of the German colonies.
This workbook is the beginning of a conversation about the colonial use of telecommunications and its effects between scientists and artists from Namibia, Togo and Germany.
Six artists and scientists cope with the echoes of this history in different ways. This workbook is just a start.
