What is place and what time again ?
How can we weave a common psycho-geography through various experiences and trajectories as well as active engagement?
How do we inhabit a place if not thought the close interaction with people theirs various stories and realities over time ?
Through the paradigm of the bi-locational documenta 14, which was organised and “broadcasted" simultaneously by two cities - Athens and Kassel. We will be discussing the notions of multiplicity cosmopolitanism as well as the process of methexis and its entanglements. The idea is to share and exchange methodologies, ways and actions (Praxis) towards the maintenance and reinforcement of an open democratic space which operates within fluid and flexible boundaries.
Marina Fokidis is a curator and writer based in Athens Greece. In February 2014, she was appointed Head of the Artistic Office, Athens and curatorial advisor for
documenta 14. She is the founder of
Kunsthalle Athena and
South as a State of Mind, a bi annual arts and culture magazine.
In 2011 Fokidis was one of the curators of the
3rd Thessaloniki Biennial. She has also been the commissioner and the curator of the
Greek Pavilion at the 51rst Venice Biennial, (2003) and one of the curators of the 1st
Tirana Biennial (2001). She was an adjunct curator at the
Art Space Pythagorion by the Schwarz Foundation, where she curated solo shows with newly commissioned works by Slavs and Tatars (2013) and Nevin Aladag (2014). From 2001 to 2008 she served as the co-director of
Oxymoron a non-for profit organization in Athens dedicated to the promotion of contemporary visual art in Greece and on an international level.
Apart from serving as an artistic director to Kunsthalle Athena from 2010- 2014, Fokidis has curated several international exhibitions among others : The Gesture ( 2003), Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art, Thessaloniki and Quarter Florence. Anathena, (2006) and Macho (2014), a solo show by Juergen Teller - both in Deste Foundation, Athens and (Her)(his)tory( 2007) in the Museum of Cycladic Art Athens.
She has written essays for different edited collections, for artists and exhibition catalogues, and for several international art magazines and publications including Frieze, Art-Agenda, Artinfo, Flash Art, Art and Australia, Manifesta Journal, Empires Ruins and Networks, A reception of Urban Ecology: Detroit and beyond, Articulating Power and Subversion, Stage 6th - The Biennial Condition , Making Biennials in Contemporary Times, among others.
Marina Fokidis has also participated in many conferences and discussions internationally including Arco 2010, Art Basel Conversations 2013, Global Art Forum, Art Dubai 2014, Liverpool Biennial 2016, São Paulo Biennial 2014 and 2016, Marco Asilo, Macro Museum – Rome 2018- among many others.
She has been jury member for various awards such as : Videobrasil 2017, Furla Award 2013, Bes Revelaco – Serralves Museum , 2013, among others. She will be part of the international jury for the “Preis der Nationalgalerie 2019”.
Fokidis has given lectures in various educational institutions among others: UFRB, Fine Arts Academy- Cachoeira, Brazil, (2017) SAAS – FEE Academy Institute of Art , Berlin, (2018) International Summer Academy in Salzburg (2018), where she will be teaching also a block seminar in the summer of 2019, and in UDK Berlin (2017) where she is teaching a year –course on Site Sensitivity, since November 2018.
Fokidis was also a professional fellow in the Akademie Schloss Solitude (2014), an international Artist-in-Residence-program, and a fellow in Vila Sul, Bahia, awarded by the Goethe Institute São Paulo (2017). From 2015-2017 she was a member of the nomadic professional residency program Museal Episodes together with other museum directors from Germany and internationally, which took place in Salvador, La Paz, Johannesburg and Athens – organized by Goethe Institute and Kulturstiftung des Bundes. She just granted a research and writing award of the Sacatar Foundation for a research and writing residency in the island of Itaparica, working with members and archives of alternative moderni(ties) and their various knowledges around the brooder issue of “cultivation-art and an all beings inclusive society”
