Painting and Printmaking class, Annette Schröter

The painting and graphic design class focuses mainly on the painted image, together with drawing and the different graphic printing techniques. Although we aim to concentrate on objective art, this does not mean that all forms of experimentation in the field of non-representational painting and drawing are excluded. The degree programme in this class serves primarily to allow the student to discover his/her own means of artistic expression. It is an intense time of experimenting, discarding and repositioning. The teaching focuses on questions of composition, choice of colours and paint application. The intention is to recognise and encourage ways for the individual to express him-/herself, so as to enable him/her to convey content, messages and emotions in the painted image. At the heart of the teaching are the individual tutorials. Here the process of artistic development is assisted and supported on a one-to-one basis. Regular class get-togethers involving all the students are another crucial part of the training. These important meetings are an opportunity for the students to present their latest works to one another. This is followed by intensive discussions on what they have seen, including questioning the content and form within the context of the class. Contemporary painting is experienced through whole-group excursions to important exhibitions. Direct contact with other important personalities from the world of art is developed by means of visits to studios and lectures. In order to prepare for life after graduation, events on understanding the basic conditions for artistic production and organising the artist's everyday life are arranged alongside the course.
