Racism and anti-Semitism go hand in hand with individual and social experiences of violence and trauma, which can be processed through grief, but also through resistance. The Kunsthaus Dresden exhibition “Raster der Gewalt - Von Blicken zu Taten” (Grid of Violence - From Looks to Deeds) shows artistic works by the US artist Talya Feldmann, the Dresden artist Susanne Keichel and the Berlin artist and stage designer Minh Duc-Pham, which are dedicated to the theme of grief in a special way.
In their works, all three artists refer to specific contemporary historical events - the attack on people in a synagogue in Halle in 2019, the murder of Dresden resident Marwa Ali El-Sherbini in a courtroom in Dresden in 2009 and the abortions that Vietnamese contract workers were forced to undergo in the GDR until 1989.
The discussion, moderated by cultural scientist and ethnologist Christine Gerbich, is dedicated to the artistic strategies of mourning and the particular voids and challenges of commemoration in a post-migrant society. The focus will be on racism, anti-Semitism and experiences of violence and questions of private and public commemoration, traumas that are inscribed in bodies, but also the special aspects of mourning at a distance, for example when family members live and die far away from the center of one's own life.
