life_sharing is an anagram of File sharing. life_sharing is a
computer sharing its hard-disk with the whole world, making all
its contents accessible via Internet. With "all" we don't mean a
directory of the hard-disk but the whole content of the computer:
programs, system (all the software used will be open source to
avoid any copyright infrigment), desktop, archives, tools,
ongoing projects, mailboxes and so on. From the moment
life_sharing starts, every Internet user will have free access
twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year to our computer: they
could rummage through our archives, search for texts or files
they're interested in, check what kind of software we work with,
watch the "live" evolution of our projects and even read our
private mail. [...] By this point of view it's
somehow as if an unlimited number of spectators had access
to an artist's atelier. [...]
Another issue raised by life_sharing is the
intellectual property question: our proposal is not a complete
abolition of copyright but its substitution with the GPL (Gnu
General Public License - http://www.gnu.org ). We wish to apply
the open source model (so the GPL) also to our works of art. [...]
The impact that this project could have is evident: a net made by
totally shared computers that have replaced with the old

Hastening a rapid demise for the free copying of digital media, the next
generation of hard disks is likely to come with copyright protection
countermeasures built in.
    Technical committees of NCTIS, the ANSI-blessed standards body, have been
discussing the incorporation of content protection currently used for
removable media into industry-standard ATA drives, using proprietary
technology originating from the 4C Entity. They're the people who brought
you CSS2: IBM, Toshiba Intel and Matsushita.
    The scheme envisaged brands each drive with a unique identifier at
manufacturing time.
    The proposals are already at an advanced stage: three drafts have already
been discussed for incorporating CPRM (Content Protection for Recordable
Media) into the ATA specification by the NCTIS T.13 committee. The
committee next meets in February. If, as expected, the CPRM extensions
become part of the ATA specification, copyright protection will be in every
industry-standard hard disk by next summer, according to IBM. [...]
    Although it hardly has a prominent media profile - yet - CPRM in hardware
is the most comprehensive mechanism for enforcing rights protection the
industry has seen, and is likely to be viewed by content producers as a
magic bullet. Its progress depends on whether its proponents can overcome

1972: Mit dem Stück "Re-make / Re-Model" von Roxy Music beginnt Pop,
sich selbst zu zitieren, sich auf die eigene Geschichte zu beziehen,
einen glamourösen Eklektizismus zum Programm zu machen. 1982 wird
dieser Umgang mit historischen Verweisen als "Zitat-Pop" neu aufgelegt
und erfährt zur Zeit mit den technischen Möglichkeiten des Sampling in
der elektronischen Musik wiederum eine Konjunktur. So zumindest eine
gängige Version von Pop-Geschichte. - Aber wie hört sich Roxy Music
heute an? Lässt sich über das Programm Re-make/Re-model Pop-Geschichte
schreiben? Wie verhalten sich diese Praktiken des Zitierens zu
theoretischen Konzepten wie "resignification" (Judith Butler) oder
"signifyin'" (Henry Louis Gates), die ihrerseits im Pop-Diskurs
prominent wurden? Und in welcher Beziehung stehen sie zu jenem
"Re-Modeling", das Ende der 1990er Jahre in Tristesse Royale zur
Signatur einer "kompletten Ironisierung" durch Zitathaftigkeit
stilisiert wird? Welche Rolle spielt das Modell Re-make/Re-model für
das, was zur Zeit als Pop-Literatur diskutiert wird? Kehrt mit dem
Wunsch nach Authentizität und Unmittelbarkeit heute das zurück, was
1972 und 1982 im Namen von Pop - und über die Devise
"Re-make/Re-model" - verabschiedet werden sollte?
