PRESS RELEASE # 1

In the summer of 2000 the third edition of the European Biennial ofContemporary Art, MANIFESTA, will take place in Ljubljana. Manifesta 3 opens on June 23 and will be hosted by the Slovene capital until September 24, 2000.

Manifesta is a European biennial of contemporary art that takes place in a different European city every two years. It is the first real attempt in the field of contemporary art to respond to the new political and socialrealities arising from changes on the European continent. Emerging into a Europe undergoing radical change, Manifesta is a work in progress, constantly enriched by the cultural contexts it encounters in city after city, each one different and unique.

Manifesta 3, fusing with the extraordinary intellectual and artistic energies of the city of Ljubljana, will view European currents through the prism of "borderline syndrome" - a term the Manifesta 3 curators Francesco Bonami, Ole Bouman, Maria Hlavajova and Kathrin Rhomberg borrowed from the field of psychology. The "borderline syndrome" and the "energy of defense" will be looked at from various perspectives connected to issues in art, politics, social reality and the ways in which individual positions relate to current transformations in Europe.
