4. Action Day #wessenfreiheit
Academy of Visual Arts,
HGB Leipzig
June 18th 2021,
11 am — 18.30 pm
about
Our website follows the need to make institutional power structures and their effects visible - in general and at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in particular. Based on the annual nationwide day of action #wessenfreiheit, we want to raise the question of the “freedom of art” and to whom it actually applies.
We see ourselves as an emancipatory platform on which the criticism of structural inequalities such as sexism, racism, classism, transphobia, anti-Semitism and other forms of marginalization, shall be promoted. We want to create a space where positions can be shown and negotiated that otherwise get no or too little space at our university. To this end, we want to work together to develop further longer-term strategies and support structures.
With our design we intend to create an order structure of information on the website that is as non-hierarchical as possible. The individual elements of our platform are in a flexible relationship to each other, the relations can be moved and changed on the desktop.

[Workshop] playful writing *an open session*
The process of writing’s often used to form a personal truth that requires a space of comfort, to process or to heal, to remember or to forget. writing as an intimate practice can find itself entangled in fears which can lead to timidity of sharing, e.g. by the feeling of exposing oneself or considering the written words not shareworthy.
We would like to view this session as a moment to shift writing into a communal possibility, thus the “unprofessionalism” is no longer a hurdle, rather a form of connection and support.
In this session we would like to talk with you about the process of writing that tries to find it’s way out of the hierarchical grid in which it might got stuck in. whether you’re interested in (writing) essays, poems, fiction, theoretical etc. does not matter; do you write, and why? do you want to share written words? or do you want to talk about something you read? would you just like to listen?
The exact outcome of this session is not set. we could continue sharing our texts, form a group that would e.g. like to work on a publication, continue talking about the writing-process …
Please sign in > here and bring everything that you want to share! we’re looking forward xx

[Networking meeting]
on abuse of power at academies
initiated by Anne Dietzsch, Harriet Meyer und Benjamin Meyer-Krahmer
The networking meeting is open to all individuals and initiatives dealing with abuse of power at art academies. Our goal is to network, to talk about our different experiences and strategies in dealing with abuse of power, to create a space where this is possible, where we can be heard, listen, exchange tips, empower each other and get to know each other. Participants can contribute input in the form of a short (!) introduction. What topics and issues related to abuse of power are particularly relevant at the academy right now, what forms of dealing with these topics/issues exist, have there been concrete changes in recent years, etc.? It could also be interesting whether new forms, formats, methods of addressing abuse of power have been or are being established.
Ideally, this exchange should feed into the conception of a two-day meeting in the winter semester, which will give us the opportunity to think about concrete changes, discuss the above and other questions in more detail, and hear other voices and expertise on the topic.
Joining us will be students and teachers from HGB Leipzig, HfG Offenbach, Kunstakademie Karlsruhe, UdK Berlin, Akademie der Bildenden Künste Munich, HfbK Hamburg and the initiative Engagement in the Arts Netherlands.
To participate in the event, you must > register in advance.

[Reading] Getting a crisis—design and mental health
Students at Universität der Künste Berlin are having a crisis. They are angry about injustice and discrimination and write with a critical eye about the problematic structures of the art academy.
Destina Atasayar, Katharina Brenner, Lucie Jo Knilli and Luisa Herbst read from the recently published essay collection Eine Krise bekommen—followed by a discussion.
Afterwards, there will be space to talk about psychological stress in the university context.
