Charlotte Perkins Gilman was born July 3, 1860 in Hartford, Connecticut, U.S.
She was a influental feminist writer, commercial artist, magazine editor, lecturer and social reformer. Some of her most notable works are: Herland, Women and Economics, When I Was A Witch and of course Yellow Wallpaper.
This autobiographical short story was based on her own experiences as she was suffering from post partum depression after giving birth to her daughter where she endured the same treatment as her heroine in Yellow Wallpaper. Her doctor denied her passion to write and consequantly nearly drove her into insanity.
She disregarded the orderd rest cure, got better and wrote her short story about
her experiences. She sent him a copy of her story. Supposedly her doctor read the published story and stopped with this inhumane practice.
