Angesichts der weltpolitischen Krisenlage im documenta-Jahr 2022 bietet sich ein Rückblick auf die Geschichte dieser, noch unter Vorzeichen des Kalten Kriegs Zeit ins Leben gerufenen Großausstellung geradezu an. Zu allen Zeiten kann die documenta als ein Seismograph nicht nur der ästhetischen Entwicklungen in einem zunehmend globalisierter gefassten Kontext verstanden werden, sondern auch der gesellschaftlichen, politischen und ökonomischen Veränderungen von 1955 bis heute. Sie ist dabei zum Schauplatz, Austragungsort und nicht zuletzt auch Instrument geworden, um Interessenkonflikte innerhalb des Kunstfelds ebenso auszutragen, wie solche internationaler Diplomatie und Ökonomie. Dabei verschränken sich verschiedene Konfliktzonen miteinander: Das langlebige Erbe des Nationalsozialismus, die imperialen Strategien US-amerikanischer Kulturpolitik, die Kommodifizierung von Kunst und Ökonomisierung ihrer Institutionen, nationalistisch, genderspezifisch und rassistisch motivierte Ein- und Ausschlüsse, Imbalancen zwischen Globalem Süden und Globalem Norden, lokale Ansprüche eines Stadtmarketing, symbolisches Kapital von Autorschaft im Verhältnis zu kollaborativen Praktiken in Kunst, Kultur und wirtschaftlichen Zusammenhängen - um hier nur einige zu nennen. Zugleich bleiben die aktuellen Entwicklungen und Schwerpunktsetzungen in der Kunst expliziter Anlass und Legitimation der in diesem Jahr zum 15. Mal stattfindenden Schau.
Das Seminar geht diesen Verstrickungen anhand sowohl einzelner künstlerischer und kuratorischer Positionen nach, als auch der historischen und aktuellen Diskurse. Die Auseinandersetzung mit der Geschichte der documenta setzt sich dabei zu einem kunsthistorischen Überblick sowohl über die Kunstentwicklung seit den 1950 er Jahren bis heute zusammen, als auch über die wesentlichen Debatten zur gesellschaftlichen Verortung von Kunst und Kultur der letzten knapp 70 Jahre.
Das Seminar richtet sich an alle interessierten Studierenden der HGB. Bei Interesse kann das Seminar auch in englischer Sprache abgehalten werden. Die einführende Sitzung findet am 19. In view of the global political crisis in the documenta year 2022, a look back at the history of this large scale exhibition, which was launched still under the auspices of the Cold War, seems like a logical step. At all times, the documenta can be understood as a seismograph not only of aesthetic developments in an increasingly globalized context, but also of social, political, and economic changes from 1955 to the present. It has become a setting, a venue, and not least an instrument for settling conflicts of interest within the art field as well as those of international diplomacy and economics. In the process, various zones of conflict intertwine: the long-lived legacy of National Socialism, the imperial strategies of U.S. cultural policy, the commodification of art and the economization of its institutions, nationalist, gender-specific, and racially motivated inclusions and exclusions, imbalances between the Global South and the Global North, local claims of a city marketing, symbolic capital of authorship in relation to collaborative practices in art, culture, and economic contexts - to name but a few. At the same time, current developments and emphases in art remain explicit reasons for and legitimation of the show, which takes place for the 15th time this year.
The seminar explores these entanglements on the basis of individual artistic and curatorial positions as well as historical and current discourses. The examination of the history of the documenta will provide an art-historical overview of the development of art from the 1950s to the present day, as well as of the essential debates on the socialpolitical positioning of art and culture over the past 70 years.
The seminar is open to all students of the HGB. It can also be held in English, shoudl tehre be an interest to do so. The introductory session will take place on April 19, 10:00-1:00, room 2.41.
