Untersch\u00e4tzt. K\u00fcnstlerinnen in Leipzig um 1900<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Marianne Fiedler, Emilie Mediz-Pelikan oder Philippine Wolff-Arndt \u2013 Die Namen dieser Frauen sind heute aus dem kollektiven Ged\u00e4chtnis verschwunden. Zusammen mit 31 weiteren K\u00fcnstlerinnen stellten sie 1897 ihre Werke auf der S\u00e4chsisch-Th\u00fcringischen Industrie- und Gewerbeausstellung (kurz STIGA) in Leipzig aus. Doch wie gelangten sie in einer Zeit, in der Frauen das Kunststudium vorbehalten war, auf eine Ausstellung, die von 400.000 Menschen besucht wurde? Wie behaupteten sie sich trotz des st\u00e4ndigen Vorwurfs des Dilettantismus?<\/h1>\n

Im MdbK wird den ausgestellten K\u00fcnstlerinnen \u2013 damals untersch\u00e4tzt und heute vergessen \u2013 neue Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet.<\/h1>\n

Auf Einladung von Marian Reisinger (MdbK Leipzig) hat die Klasse Installation und Raum eine Intervention und Rauminstallation entwickelt, die als szenographisches Display fungiert und zugleich auf die bis in die Gegenwart hineinreichende strukturelle Diskriminierung von weiblichen und nicht-bin\u00e4ren K\u00fcnstler*innen hinweist.<\/h1>\n

Wir, die K\u00fcnstler*innen der Klasse Installation und Raum der Hochschule f\u00fcr Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig haben in einem kontinuierlichen Prozess und kollaborativen Austausch eine Intervention und Rauminstallation entwickelt. W\u00e4hrend das Kunstmuseum den Blick auf die STIGA richtet, richten wir unseren Blick auf das Kunstmuseum.<\/h1>\n

Was passierte in dieser Zeit, bis zu diesem Moment, der Gegenwart?<\/h1>\n

Die Institution zeigt Kunst und legitimiert sie zugleich, gef\u00f6rdert und bezahlt als kultureller Repr\u00e4sentant der Stadt.<\/h1>\n

Doch wer wird hier repr\u00e4sentiert?<\/h1>\n

Wir betraten das Archiv des MdbK, durchforsteten die gezeigten Werke und vergangenen Ausstellungen. Die Ergebnisse dieser Recherche schwingen sich klar sichtbar \u00fcber den Boden hinweg.<\/h1>\n

Wir haben die hermetische Glasfassade des Museums \u201aaufgebrochen\u2019 und den Ausstellungsraum im Keller mit dem Stadtraum verbunden. Trennt uns nur noch die verschwommene Scheibe, von dem, was wir sichtbar machen wollten?<\/h1>\n

Oder sehen wir es l\u00e4ngst und schauen nur nicht hin?<\/h1>\n

Deshalb wird hier das MdbK selbst als exemplarische Institution im Kunstbetrieb und die Sichtbarkeit von FLINTA*s im Museum hinterfragt. Die in der Ausstellung gezeigten Bilder \u00f6ffnen unseren versperrten Blick und lassen uns fragen: Welche Netzwerke bilden wir und wie wollen wir unsere Position nutzen, um durch Recherche, Lernen und den Austausch die Leiter nach oben zu klettern? Oder stecken wir im Keller fest?<\/h1>\n

Underestimated. Female artists in Leipzig around 1900<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Marianne Fiedler, Emilie Mediz-Pelikan or Philippine Wolff-Arndt – The names of these women have disappeared from the collective memory today. Together with 31 other women artists, they exhibited their works at the Saxon-Thuringian Industrial and Commercial Exhibition (STIGA for short) in Leipzig in 1897. But at a time when women were not allowed to study art, how did they get into an exhibition that was visited by 400,000 people? Howdid they hold their own despite constant accusations of dilettantism?<\/h1>\n

At the MdbK, new attention will be paid to the exhibited women artists – underestimated at the time and forgotten today.<\/h1>\n

At the invitation of Marian Reisinger (MdbK Leipzig), the Class for Installation and Space has developed an intervention and spatial installation thatfunctions as a scenographic display and at the same time points to the structural discrimination against female and non-binary artists that continuesinto the present.<\/h1>\n

We, the artists of the Class for Installation and Space of the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig, have developed an intervention and spatial installation in a continuous process and collaborative exchange.<\/h1>\n

While the Kunstmuseum turns its gaze to STIGA, we turn our gaze to the Kunstmuseum.<\/h1>\n

What happened during this time, up to this moment, the present?<\/h1>\n

The institution shows art and at the same time legitimizes it, promoted and paid as a cultural representative of the city.But who is represented here?<\/h1>\n

We entered the archives of the MdbK, sifted through the works on display and past exhibitions. The results of this research clearly resonate across thefloor.<\/h1>\n

We ‘broke’ the hermetic glass fa\u00e7ade of the museum and connected the exhibition space in the basement with the urban space. Is only the blurry panestill separating us from what we wanted to make visible?<\/h1>\n

Or do we already see it and just don’t look at it?<\/h1>\n

Therefore, the MdbK itself as an exemplary institution in the art world and the visibility of FLINTA*s in the museum are questioned here.<\/h1>\n

The images shown in the exhibition open our obstructed view and make us ask:<\/h1>\n

What networks do we form and how do we want to use our position to climb the ladder through research, learning and exchange? Or are we stuck in thebasement?<\/h1>\n
