On Graphic-Design and Visual Culture

From 19 May -22 July we turn the cool pavilion in the middle of Potsdam’s Freundschaftspark (on the outskirts of Berlin) into an exhibition and event platform – about projects and works of the System-Design-Class and its students and teachers from the last years.

The show is about conceptual approaches in graphics, speculation within practices of visual culture, and hybrids between design and art. And what happens when horticulture meets printed matter!

Der Ausstellungspavilion auf der Potsdamer Freundschaftsinsel wird für zwei Monate zu einer Veranstaltungs- und Ausstellungsplattform der Klasse System-Design an der Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig. Eine neue
Generation von Gestaltern stellt Arbeiten und Ideen aus den letzten fünf Jahren vor und macht den Kunstverein
zum Schauplatz eines Experiments an der Schnittstelle von Design, Kunst und Ausstellungsort.

The Görlitzer Sammlungen für Geschichte und Kultur is a regional museum situated in the German town Görlitz which is directly adjoined through the Neisse river to the Polish town Zgorzelec. A newly developed visual identity establishes a fresh and clear graphic language for this cultural institution with a visual hierarchy that joins the two departments and the three houses that make up the museum.

A new name abbreviation was introduced for the Sammlungen: GöSam. A black and white typographical system which is everywhere to be found is annexed to a versatile but distinctive colour system and an image-grid, which allowed the photographic display of the many historical artefact of the collections on various applications, like flyers and posters, to an image-grid of coloured photographs of artifacts found in the collection. Furthermore, a new marque combining the letters G and Ö of Görlitz was designed as an additional playful typographical and friendly symbol for the museum.

Aeolian Islands is an exploration of the function of objects in movies, i.e. revealing something about a character or a situation, reflecting an atmosphere or summing up the plot. By removing the objects from their cinematic context, combination with each other, formal alienation and relocation in a book new narrative contexts evolve. The objects become the protagonists of a new story.

Found and built objects with narrative potential

Eva Weinmayr is an artist, a co-director of AND-Publishing London and with Andrea Francke the initiator of the Piracy-Project. Piracy Project is an international publishing and exhibition endeavour, which investigates the theoretical, judicial and practical effects and the complexity of book-piracy and the creative manipulations of reproduction.

The Piracy-Project isn’t about theft or counterfeit. Its focus resides in creating a platform where questions about copy, re-edition, translation, paraphrasing, imitation, reorganization and manipulation of works that already exist can be addressed.

In the workshop with Eva we explored different forms of alternative publishing and strategies of appropriation. Also, we developed our individual projects for the “Alternate Futures”-Reader further, and worked on its editorial concept.

Visuelle Kultur (visual culture) ist unmittelbar verbunden mit dem Verlangen über das gemeinhin Wahrnehmbare hinauszugehen und zu einer Startbahn mutiger Gedanken und Ideen zu werden, beredsames Vehikel zu sein für scheinbar unmögliche Möglichkeiten oder Reflexionen über (noch) nicht existente Situationen und deren Psychologien.

Dieses Feld schöpferischer Arbeit ist voller historische Artefakte, die utopische Impulse gesetzt oder gar utopische Programme grafisch formuliert haben.

Und neben der Lösung aktueller Probleme verkörpert Design als wichtiger Teil dieser visuellen Kultur die Kapazität das Nicht-Existente zu imaginieren, nämlich zu gestalten, und Modelle in unvermessenen Raum zu projizieren. Gedankengebäude finden in Visualität – und Text – ein Zuhause.

Schließlich sind Formen von Design ambivalenter Gestalt – ambivalent in Intention und Affekt. Der Begriff der Funktionalität ist hier weit zu öffnen. Auch grafische Formen mögen doppelte Böden eingezogen haben oder gar aufs Glatteis führen, Spekulation sichergeglaubten Paradigmen vorziehen. Einzig eine Zukunft ohne Design ist nicht vorstellbar. Under the name Love, Peace and Jokes, Lysanne Bellemare, Pia Christmann and Jaroslaw Kubiak designed a for the time being one-off event and exhibition. Posters layed under parasols, friendly piggybanks and cocktails served as mediators between the visitors and the designers. Exhibition photographs by Sebastian Kissel.

Within the five day framework of the Workshop “1A Design Schule” a booklet was produced which documented the results of explorations in the wide field of graphic design production. For the workshop, exercises and thematic focal points were developed around questions of composition, colour, form, lettering, music, video, publishing and gymnastics. For example, A3 posters were produced which were then placed on the back of the folded loose spreads of the publication. Amongst other exercices, graffiti tags referencing scribbles found in a variety of places in and around the Academy were made out of toilet paper on black cardboard .

In cooperation with the “Landesvereinigung Kulturelle Kinder- und Jugendbildung Sachsen” the workshop was realized in the Class System-Design led by Prof. Oliver Klimpel. The workshop, the booklet and their contents were developed and produced by Lysanne Bellemare, Constanze Hein and Christian Hoffelner. The booklet was printed on a Risograph in an edition of 50 copies and published under “1A Publishing”.

The workshop “1A Designschule” (20.–24. Februar 2012) is a project by Lysanne Bellemare, Constanze Hein, Christian Hoffelner and Prof. Oliver Klimpel in the Class System-Design at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig. In cooperation with the “Landesvereinigung Kulturelle Kinder- und Jugendbildung Sachsen”. Five students between the ages of sixteen and eighteen attended the “1A Designschule”. Over the five days of the workshop they reflected on extracts from a wide field of graphic design production questioning relationships of composition, colour, form, lettering, music, video, publishing and gymnastics. Within this framework a booklet was produced on a Risograph in an edition of 50 copies and published under “1A Publishing”.

In der Kommunikation über Bilder ist nichts selbstverständlich oder eindeutig lesbar. Bilder sind höchst spekulativ, einfach manipulierbar und dienen doch ständig zur Aufstellung von Behauptungen oder als Beweismittel zur Manifestation verschiedenster Interessen. Es geht darum, das Bewusstsein für die Komplexität der Ebenen zu schärfen auf denen Bilder kommunizieren und einen gezielten Umgang mit ihnen zu schulen – Welche Informationen stecken in einem Bild? Was interpretieren wir hinein? Wie kann man Bilder zB. über die Veränderung ihres Kontextes beeinflussen, gezielt verändern? Warum ist das wichtig?

Gemeinsames Erarbeiten verschiedener Narrationen aus Bildern auf einer Wandfläche im Klassenraum.

Material: Jede/r bringt 10 Bilder, schwarz-weiß, auf A4 ausgedruckt mit.

Wie können wir die Welt betrachten, ohne den herkömmlichen Wissensstandards zu folgen? Wie lassen sich neue Perspektiven auf die Welt und unsere eigene Anschauung schaffen? Wie lassen sich eigene Realitäten und Wege jenseits der Modelle konstruieren auf die wir konditioniert sind?

Im letzten Teil des Workshops wird eine Narration bzw. Karte aus Texten erstellt die mitgebracht, vorgetragen und diskutiert werden. Die Kommunikation über Text wirft andere Fragestellungen auf, als die über Bilder. Viel stärker steht hier die Autorschaft und Ausdrucksweise des Verfassers im Vordergrund, Spielraum zur subjektiven Interpretation steht hinten an. Gilt das geschriebene Wort mehr als das Bild? Warum ist es vermeintlich eindeutiger?

Sie stellten die Bücher “Mc Sweeneys Issue 36″ (San Francisco, 2011) und “Vitra, The Home Collection” (Schweiz, 2006) vor.

IF THEN DANCE ist eines von verschiedenen Experimenten, die ich im Vorfeld in Bezug auf Motivation der Teilnehmer einer partizipatorischen Aktion gemacht habe und untersucht unterschiedliche Freiheitsgrade. Dieses habe ich konkretisiert, woraus ein 12-minütiger Film entstanden ist, der eine Tanzaktion in ihrem Ablauf zeigt. Dafür habe ich ein System von Farbtanzanzügen entwickelt. Vier Personen tragen voneinander variierende Anzüge, die aus neun verschiedenen Farben bestehen und den Körper so in verschiedene Zonen unterteilen. Ich bin als Initiatorin im Film sichtbar und stelle sieben verschiedene Aufgaben, die sich auf die Farben beziehen. Die Teilnehmer versuchen die Aufgaben zu erfüllen. Sie werden durch das ihnen, im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes, übergestülpte System der Farbtanzanzüge und den Aufgaben in ihrer Bewegung eingeschränkt, dadurch aber auch zu neuen oder unerwarteten Bewegungen befähigt.

It seems to is the title under which two works were invited to converse with one another.

Suggestion de presentation (Serving suggestion) – Diplom consists of a banquet motive installed in front of a raw wall of the Werkschau Halle.

Although the motive does not reenact a specific painting, there is something in the light, the arrangement, the colours which activates a reminiscence of Still Life paintings. At the same time, the title of the work evokes more prosaic uses of such a motive, “Suggestion de presentation” is indeed the fine print disclaimer one encounters on food packaging or advertisement to indicate, that what one sees at first, is neither what one will eat, nor get…

The second work is made of digital prints, sugar icing and food colouring, hence the title: Images Glacées (Glazed Images).

Glacé is a french term which belongs to the field of pastry, where it means “icing” and to the field of mass media where it means “glossy”. In french the expression “papier glaçé” (glossy paper) is used to refer to cheap and somewhat populistic publications which feed on images and deliver them profusely. The images hanged on the walls come from my collection of personal snapshots. Their subjects are random, they are all unimportant, uneventful images, but images in which I could always recognize influences of already seen works and pictures; as if my gaze was never entirely personal. Transferred into a rough black & white halftone the pictures forces viewers to stand back in order to decipher them. Colour is brought back with sugar icing which either highlights an element of the image or makes it shift in a wonderland where houses are made of cake and road signs are lollipops. The magazine is the result of visual research towards a better understanding of the Städtische Sammlungen für Geschichte und Kultur Görlitz (the municipal collections of the city of Görlitz). The students respond visually to the City of Görlitz, the different buildings housing the municipal collections and their particularities, individual artefacts, themes surrounding the ideas of collecting and exhibiting, as well as the role of the visitor in an exhibition.

TEST TEST

The magazine is the result of visual research towards a better understanding of the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research in Leipzig. With their short visual essays the students react in different ways to the Institute, its different lab groups and the staff, particular fields of research, the appeal of scientific images, questions of graphical reproduction and the legibility of experiments and their results. This playful and speculative graphical conception is the basis for an exchange with the Institute.

They introduced the books “IF/THEN Play” and Jeremy Deller’s “Folk Archive”.

Helmut Smits (artist from Rotterdam) presented the book 123 ideas by Helmut Smits (Onomatopee, 2008).

Arne Linde (gallerist from Leipzig) intruduced Arthur Zalewski: Somebody’s Got to Do it (Spector Books, 2005).

This exhibition showcases different approaches to the theme of class portraits. In addition we are presenting three other design projects : THANKS FOR SHARING, PROBEBÜHNE and the visual identity of the HGB Rundgang 2010. The interaction of these different works gives insight into the methods of operation of the class and its members.

Oblique Strategies were devised by the musician Brian Eno and the painter Peter Schmidt in 1975. They were looking for ways out when stuck in a creative process and experimented with alternative methods. Our set of cards is inspired by this idea and contains non-linear, anti-intuitive suggestions to stimulate in these situations.

we need answers – a special event for the open house / porfolio day at the HGB brought to you by the System-Design Class

The System Design class offered advice to potential students during the open house day. This took the form of posters we designed during one of our Probebühne and one on one consultations.

On Wednesday we tought of rules, mantras, and good advice. We made black and white posters using only the Univers, our handwriting, scissors, glue and a photocopy machine.

On Thursday, our visitors received insider's tips and opinion from helpful students.

Publication documenting the artzine exhibition exhibition & symposium Thanks for sharing!, that took place in May 2010 at d21 art space, Leipzig.

Daniel Gaffner presented the book Europe — A History by Norman Davies (London, 1997).

Katrin von Maltzahn intruduced Maciunas’ Learning Machines by Astrit Schmidt-Burkhardt (Berlin, 2005).

They brought with them many publications and books they designed for the cultural domain. Many thanks to them both! Their website is here.

She presented the activities of the group Mass Observation in Blackpool (UK) in the 1930s and inscribed them in relation to her own work.

Anlass und Ausgangspunkt des hier vorliegenden Buches ist die Diskrepanz zwischen der alltagssprachlichen Verwendung und der philosophischen Auslegung von dem Begriff der Wiederholung.
Ziel ist es, den Begriff von seiner negativen Auslegung im umgangssprachlichen Sinne zu lösen und diesen als einen positiven für den Leser erfahrbar zu machen. Ausgehend von dem Zitat A + B + C + D + E = mehr als die Summe der Teile der Künstlerin Barbara Bloom gliedert sich das Buch in fünf Kapitel. Ausgehend von E spiegelt sich die Buchstruktur.
Es folgen die Kapitel D, C, B und A in beide Richtungen, sowohl zum Buchanfang als auch zum Buchende hin. Das Kapitel A, B, C und D besteht somit aus jeweils zwei Teilen, einem Teil am Anfang des Buches und sowie einem Weiteren am Buchende.
Die beiden Teile eines Kapitels können jeweils einheitlich oder aber auch getrennt von einander betrachtet werden. Gestalterisch setzen sich die Kapitel von einander ab, sowohl in Bezug auf Design und Typographie als auch in der Grammatur des Papiers.
Inhaltlich unterscheiden sich die Kapitel insofern voneinander, dass der Begriff der Wiederholung in seinen verschiedenen Ausprägungen in Wort und Bild behandelt wird.

The first Session of “A Library of Friends” took place in July 2010. We were happy to welcome Emily King (London-based author, curator, and design critic) and Barbara Steiner (director of Leipzig’s Museum for Contemporary Art) to present the books

respectively.

Vom 19.7 bis zum 29.7 wurde die  Schrift “Cruiser”  auf Ebay zum Verkauf angeboten. “Cruiser” basiert auf dem Logo der “American Export Lane”, welches wir auf einem Plakat von 1934 gefunden haben. Ausgehend von den vorhandenen Buchstaben des Logos haben wir eine Basis-Schrift entwickelt (Versalien sowie Satzzeichen). Teil unseren Konzeptes war eine Veränderung der Schrift während der Auktion, um somit den Versteigerungsprozess sichtbar zu machen.
Im Blickfeld stand die Rückkopplung zwischen Käufer und Verkäufer: Für jeden Bieter und Beobachter wurde ein neues Sonderzeichen hinzugefügt. Hierfür haben wir Gestalter und Grafikdesigner eingeladen, ein neues Zeichen zu entwickeln. Am Ende der Auktion wurde “Cruiser” für 180 Euro verkauft und durch die große Zahl an Bietern und Beobachtern konnten wir der Schrift 109 neue Glyphen hinzufügen.

A library of books that have become friends and dear companions to our invited speakers. Each guest will be talking about one book chosen by him or her that is not in the college library yet, but will now become part of the growing “Library of Friends“. The different materials (posters, invitation cards…) for this project were designed by Paul Spehr, Timo Hinze, Anna Gille, Constanze Hein, Pia Christmann and Patrick Vollrath, Marie Lautsch und Lea Kontak.

»Was übrig bleibt, ist für Andere.« fragt nach dem Umgang mit fremder Erinnerung. Grundlage ist ein altes Fotoalbum, dass die Urlaubsreise einer unbekannten Familie dokumentiert. Durch eine Neustrukturierung des Materials wird über private Erinnerungen hinausgehend Typologisches, Ambilvalentes und Charakteristisches deutlich. Die zugrunde liegende Struktur lässt zusätzlich das Album durch das Buch hinweg erneut entstehen.

THANKS FOR SHARING – ART ZINE Exhibition KUNSTRAUM D21 Gallery, LEIPZIG

The furniture series THINGS FOR SHARING! combines seating with display functionality and was initially developed for the exhibition THANKS FOR SHARING! at the Kunstraum D21 Gallery Leipzig.The exhibition was curated by Regine Ehleiter.

Die Möbel verbinden sowohl unterschiedlichste Ausstellungsflächen für z.B. 300 Zines, als auch Sitzmöglichkeiten für die Besucher der Austellung. Die THINGS FOR SHARING! können von den Besuchern verschoben und anders angeordnet werden. Aufeinander gestellt werden sie zu einem Regal, das den Raum umstrukturiert. Zwei Bänke übereinander werden zum Arbeitstisch oder Stehpult. Während eines Vortrags bieten die THINGS FOR SHARING! Sitzplätze für 40 Personen – und können anschließend in kurzer Zeit wieder umgebaut werden. Alle THINGS FOR SHARING! sind aus alten Möbeln und Holzresten handgefertigt. Auf die vorherige Nutzung verweisen z. Mit der filmischen Collage Léaud, un ensemble wird auf die zeitliche und formale
Fragmentarik und Dynamik des Körpers im Film am Beispiel Jean-Pierre Léauds verwiesen. Dafür werden die einzelnen Szenen ihren ursprünglichen Filmen und Abfolgen entrissen und unter thematischen
Aspekten, mittels Split-Screen neu arrangiert und zu Kapiteln zusammengezogen, um die Idee der Film-Figur über den einzelnen Film hinaus sichtbar zu machen. Der daraus hervorgegangene Film-Loop speist sich aus 28 Léaud-Filmen, welche zwischen 1959 und 2005 entstanden und umfasst 125 min Filmmaterial.

Old Things for New Readers Installation for College Open Day / Rundgang 2010 We dug up all old printed matter from college, which was sleeping in backrooms and had been considered impossible to sell anymore! What value could we attribute to them now since these items were not in circulation anymore, not used, virtually dead – how could we re-assess their value or even change it?

• We brought these items back to the attention of the visitors by positioning them visually.
• Everyone in the group wrote reviews of them, which tried to simply describe them and outline their graphic construction and appeal. They were then read by two professional radio presenters and Florian and recorded, and these audio reviews were played in the room.
• During this audio-loop visitors were invited to take copies of the items with them to a new home.
• After a reading of an item’s review was played, (but if not all copies had been taken yet) one or two copies were put through a shredder each time, transforming them merely into the next stage of the recycling process..

More Speed-Teaching! The year after the great success of the previous year, and with it more student-to-student-teaching of internal secrets of the college, useful micro-typographical things for painting students, vocal training, memory testing, oriental pattern constructions, book recommendations, digital filing tips, colour systems, joint reading, literature recommendations etc.

A competition in the class for the design of a series of A1 calendars (for the next 5 years) was organized together with Dresden book-binding company “Bindwerk”. The winning entry by Anna Gille, Timo Hinze and Henrik Rossbander combined a perforated front sheet, which parts would be taken away, day after day, to reveal more and more of a map featuring amusing facts and anniversaries corresponding to the dates on the front. Various tests were done to ensure the production of the calendar was possible. There are 4 more designs for the next years to come!

In the canon of independent, design-driven Auteur-graphics markets are considered a malign force – and signs of commercial thinking the beginning of the end for uncompromised and pure design decisions. But where, besides these modern myths, could the entrepreneur within the designer come into this equation? Where are the chances in this idea? In this project we were predominantly looking at these aspects of the market:

• the market for pro-active, inquiring design and if it is possibly identify and generate these markets or assignments ourselves – and
• Shopping itself and the methods and underlying principles of retails and sale – producing an
• contextualized assessment of selected aspects.

Ein Waschbär im Wohnzimmer, ein Eber der Amok läuft, ein Uhu auf der Fensterbank oder Blesshühner im Müllwahn. Tiere sind überall, mitten unter uns. Ganz besonders im gemeinsamen Lebensraum Stadt. Eine Begegnung mit einem wildlebenden Tier ist ein Erlebnis. Es ist nicht plan- oder berechenbar. Was macht diese Erlebnisse aus? Wie werden die tierischen Stadtbewohner von den menschlichen wahrgenommen? In diesem Buch kommen einige »Stadt-Tier-Experten« zu Wort und Menschen aus verschiedenen europäischen Städten von ihren Begegnungen mit Tieren. Die Stadt wird zu einem Ort, der zur Safari einlädt.

In April/May 2008 I joined Pierced Arrows (ex-Dead Moon) – a Rock ’n’ Roll band from Portland, OR – on their European Tour. Being asked to sell the band’s merchandise I came up with the idea of a tour documentation and turned it into my diploma project. After the tour I had a mix of own as well as contributed and collected material (texts, photos, interviews, flyer, tickets, backstage passes etc). Though I planned to produce a book I soon realized that the variety of the accumulated material required different space and mediums. Following this approach I created seven different items that offer the viewer diverse aspects of a tour. After my diploma I self-published a limited edition of 300 copies (offset-print)and started to sell it on upcoming tours.

An installation to stimulate debate: After 10 years after the collapse of the Berlin Wall and the peaceful revolution in Leipzig, the Federal Ministry of Transport organized a series of symposiums that invited leaders of industry, cultural life, science and research to discuss the developments of the last years in Leipzig and what it could mean to be a citizen of this town. The work of Sandra Barth and Kristin Gertz made use of the “Words of the Years” from 1989 to 2009, which had been officially selected by the Society of German Language. .

In an age in which reproduction routines are almost entirely interpreted digitally and broken into binary code and processed, a survey of analogue techniques of reproduction is to be developed. We want to concentrate predominantly on technologies based on (photo-) chemical principles used in the graphic industry before the digital revolution replaced them by the computer. Seemingly “non-artistic” tools which were used in offices, for aiding administrative work, producing presentation material, amateur publishing.
Many of this pre-digital machinery is hardly part of graphic production or a tool towards presentation material anymore, only in small numbers still in use and on the brink on been forgotten or disappear, with all its idiosyncrasies.
This project assesses the gear, tests methods and explores and maps the backgrounds, qualities, reasons for occurrence and historic decline.

This show featured pieces of our “Space Exploration” project that dealt with issues of space. How the spatial properties of a room could be recorded, how interventions in space could alter the reading and using of it. The works and experiments were shown in our project room 2.23 (the very object of our research as well) and in floor and college courtyard – and a catalogue was designed. The title “Never look empty, never feel full” is borrowed from the generator project (1976–1979) by Cedric Price, who had accompanied us occasionally in our work.

Triggered by the experiences of the previous Positions-Talk Oliver devised a setting in which we, the students from the Class for System-Design, would teach the 1st years, who had just entered college. And we do that by borrowing the principle of speed-dating that would make us teaching one-to-one, and after 5 minutes had elapsed – and an audible sound – students would move one seat further along our long table. The brief was to teach something which would be truly useful for the 1st years, something perhaps only we knew, something we thought valuable sharing.

Design of college stall. Our design merged the romantic (deconstructed) landscape of Caspar David Friedrich with the mundane charm of domestic interiors of IKEA make, or the use of the infamous Billy shelf, to be precise, part of every student home. It tried to bring back, tongue-in-cheek, the cultural comments of book production back into the private and hyper-normal.

Installation for College Open Day / Rundgang. Tying in with the project “Space Exploration” we created an installation that turned our impossibility to fully use, or to experience our incredibly high class room (7.4m) into a physical activity: we put a Trampoline in the centre and divided the room vertically into 2 zones by a woven layer of string-lace. Good fun, and sporty too!

Oliver was asked to do a 2h-lecture for the 1st years about his work. Instead we did a little workshop in which the 1st years were asked to respond to a series of images by inventing captions, and, in turn, various lines of text with images. Meanwhile 4 students of the class, Sandra Barth, Aurelia Markwalder, Mario Helbing, Florian Lamm, and Oliver and Anna-Lena, produced a welcome to the 1st years that took precisely 2h to make and digest together: a marble-cake.

Zutaten Marmorkuchen

• 125g weiche butter rühren bis sich spitzchen bilden
• 3 eier, 125 g zucker, 1 prise salz zugeben
• rühren bis masse hell ist
• 1/2 EL vanillezucker, 1/2 dl milch beifügen und mischen
• 250g mehl, 1 EL backpulver dazusieben und verrühren
• masse in form füllen
• evtl. mandelscheibchen darüberstreuen
• bei 180° 40-45 min backen
• die hälfte der masse in form füllen
• 3-4EL Schokopulver, 1-2EL Milch
• unter die andere teighälfte mischen
• in form geben
• mit gabel leicht mischen
