Photography

Photography as photography, but also photography as a privileged tool of the different artistic discourses: this is the area of tension within which the teaching of photography at the Leipzig Academy of Visual Arts moves. It is characterised by an openness to the media that takes photography -- understood here as a process of recording and securing tracks and signs -- beyond the limits of the actual medium and allows it to take on the form of video or film, a combination of text and image, installation, objects, etc. The aim of the main study is for students to develop their own mindset and imagery.

The course is divided into the Photography and Media class taught by Joachim Brohm (currently deputised for by Heidi Specker), the Photography in the Field of Contemporary Art class taught by Peter Piller and the Photography classes taught by Tina Bara and Beate Gütschow. Through their teaching and activities, they have put together a course that can be defined as a form of artistic training which has a different aim from that of the courses in Photographic or Communications Design. This method is continued through interdisciplinary excursions and projects in which the debate about art is understood as a processual development of content and appropriate form which converts the individual view of the world into a position in its own right.

Particular weight is given to the formal realisation of the subject matter within the scope of the diploma, where the artistic work becomes a professional public presentation.
